Local activist and Canadian engineers work on the removal of the mercury in clay lake
By16-year-old Paris Meekis teams up with Masoud Soroush and his team of engineers at Drexel University Ontario to combat the high levels of mercury in the clay lake Ontario, for the safety of Grassy Narrows residents.
Masoud Soroush has been a teacher at Drexel Engineering University since 1993, he has contributed in more than 400 publications, as well as over 215 widely cited articles. He has a PhD in chemical engineering and a masters degree in electrical and chemical engineering. He researches polymer membranes, polymers, process systems engineering, functional safety, nanomaterials, cyber manufacturing, and renewable power generation and storage systems.
Paris Meekis grew up in Grassy Narrows and began political activism in June 2019

Soroush and his team of engineers at Drexel university have been working on designing a large scaled water filter for removing mercury from our water systems. Currently there are many small filters for mercury removal, the real challenge will be the clay, as mercury tends to stick to the river bed. With Paris Meekis knowledge of the area, she can raise awareness and funding to extend their research.
