Overfishing Is Killing Our Economy and Our World…

Overfishing and Destructive fishing practices..

Where is it mostly done? Overfishing in mostly occurring in Southeast Asia.

What ecosystem is affected? The ecosystem that is affected mostly is the aquatic ecosystem. When the take fish from their homes, and they keep taking and taking lots at a time. They take food from the predators. Which leaves them with not enough food to feed every predator in that area that needs it.

Why are they overfishing? Catch more to make more is the simplest explanation. People in the fishing industry fish, and fish for more. So the payout can be bigger. A Lack of Fish Population Data can also lead to overfishing  Not having accurate information about a fish population’s distribution can result in catch limits that are too high.

Who is responsible for the damage of overfishing? Increasing human demand, poor management of fisheries, and lack of protective regulations.

What are the possible long-term effects?  Harvesting large amounts of fish and seafood to sell, fishing operations catch and often unintentionally kill untargeted marine life, including juvenile fish, corals and other bottom-feeding organisms, sharks, whales, sea turtles, and birds. More than one-third of all sharks, rays, are now at risk of extinction because of overfishing, governments and regional fisheries have to stop overfishing.  When a stock is overfished it is unsustainable. This can cause ecosystems to collapse. If overfishing continues, there will not be enough fish left in the ocean to feed future generations.

What is overfishing? Overfishing is when people reduce a population of fish by catching too much. The threat goes past damage to the ecosystem. It can cause food crisis and loss of employment for 60 million people. The impact of overfishing is mostly on the marine environment, but the economy can also be affected. The saltwater fishing industry in Florida is worth around $9.2 billion annually. The worth of the coral reefs in Florida is $375 billion each year.  Overfishing could cost half of this.

What can you do? We can create more marine protected areas. We need to educate everyone and spread the word about overfishing. Join a campaign and support organizations in your area.
