Soil erosion due to deforestation in Haiti

By

The ecosystem

Haiti is a tropical area that covers 27,750 km squared. The temperature and rainfall are high all year. The average temperature is 23-31 degrees Celsius. There are many rainforests in Haiti as well as many beaches.

Energy flow within the ecosystem

Organisms in the ecosystem:

Grass- Short plants that cover an area of ground. Soil- Where plants grow, mixture of clay rock and particles. Plants- living organism. Insects- Small animal with 6 legs and one or 2 pairs of wings. Birds- Warm blooded, has feathers, wings and beaks. Deer- hooved mammal with antlers. Rodents- Small mammals that lives on land. Frog- amphibian, smooth skin, lives on land but can also swim. Panther- Large wild cat. Crocodile- Large reptile, short legs, lives in water but also goes on land.

Trophic level energy transfer

In the first trophic level I placed grass because the first level is the primary producer. Grass is a primary producer for many organisms in the ecosystem.

I placed rodents in the second trophic level because rodents are primary consumers. They consume the grass from the first trophic level but are not at the top because other animals in the ecosystem eat rodents.

The third trophic level I put deer because they are the secondary consumers. The deer eat the rodents but arent the apex predator in this ecosystem.

Finally in the fourth ecosystem is the apex predator, in this ecosystem the apex predator is a panther. It eats the deer and nothing is above the panther in the ecosystem so it is in the fourth trophic level.

How deer are impacted by human activity

The deer are impacted by human activity because the humans hunt them. During deer season the deer are hunted and killed in big numbers. Another way deer in this ecosystem are affected by humans is because humans also hunt and kill birds which is a main part of the deer’s diet which is affecting the deer as well.

Limiting Factors

The limiting factor in this ecosystem is habitat loss due to the deforestation. The human activity affects this because the humans are the ones cutting down the trees for their own benefit. Humans have cut down many trees in the Haiti forests and have taken many homes for animals down with them. Deforestation has impacted the carrying capacity of the ecosystem because the more trees that are cut down the more animal habitats are lost. If the habitats are lost then so are the animals because that was their home and they wouldn’t be able to survive long without their homes.
